Pickmere Hall Farm Barn in Cheshire is a heritage-led rural conversion project focused on transforming a collection of traditional agricultural buildings into high-quality residential dwellings. Set within the Cheshire Green Belt near Pickmere, the scheme sought to preserve the character and historic significance of the former farmstead while securing a sustainable long-term future for the site and its heritage assets.

Strategic Approach

The development strategy centred on the sensitive restoration and conversion of vacant farm buildings that had fallen into significant disrepair after years of underuse. Due to the site’s designation as non-designated heritage assets, alongside ecological constraints including protected bat species and Green Belt planning restrictions, the approach required careful planning, heritage consideration, and environmental management. The scheme prioritised retaining the traditional brick-built agricultural character of the barns while adapting them to modern residential standards through sympathetic design and infrastructure improvements

Results and Effect

The completed project successfully brought a neglected rural site back into productive long-term use, preserving important historic farm buildings and enhancing the wider landscape setting. The redevelopment created high-quality countryside homes while safeguarding the agricultural heritage and identity of the site. By repurposing existing structures rather than pursuing extensive new-build development, the scheme demonstrated a sustainable approach to rural regeneration that balanced heritage conservation, environmental considerations, and modern living requirements
